Well, added WinXP as stated in a previous entry. So just to make things interesting, now have Fedora running on the other hard drive. At some future point I hope to have all my net ramblings on the linux side of things and all my games and various other programs on the XP side of the house.

New puter....sorta

Just a quick post. A couple weeks back my puter decided to huff and puff and sputter. It may have been possessed. There being no member of the clergy close at hand and holy water being at a premium around these parts (You should try our tap water, it's possessed too!), I decided to invest in a new video card/motherboard/cpu. After installing all three items in the ol' puter shell, turned the beast on an started loading programs (had slicked the hard drive before changing the innards). It did NOT like my video card. It did not like my ram (I had increased it by 256mg for a total of 768). Soooooo, after some reading and cursing and checking of specs.....Father forgive me for I have sinned....I went and upgraded (?) my OS to WinXP pro. And now all the parts of my puter play nice with each other.

CFR....or the road to hell is paved with good intentions

On the face if it, less money given to the rascals in political office to either run their campaigns or toward the respective political parties (at least in the form of *soft money*) in theory, should he a good thing. And the supremes do acknowledge there appears to have been some fast and loose bending of the rules up to this point regarding political ads on both television and radio by both parties and interested *non-partisan* groups from all parts of the political spectrum.

The ruling is 235 pages and my eyes started glazing after page 10 (alright page 8 but the hour is late). I will read the whole damn thing as well as some follow up sites (Hoover Inst, Brooking's, ACLU) before I go into great detail.

But I am left with this feeling in my gut. (and upon further reading this *may* change) We have just prohibited, to some degree, freedom of speech. The intent may be a good one, but surely there is a better way to stem the flow of cash then limiting ads on radio/television (the internet?...that was not clear in what I have read so far) 30 days prior to a primary and 60 days prior to a national election.

I may not agree with many of the ads that bombard us during the high holy days of politics, mud slinging is egregious from either side. But just as I dislike the various hate groups which are allowed to spew their rot, be it pamphlets or marching, as long as they are not doing anything more than exercising their constitutional rights, we as a people must honor that right. (We don't have to like it...and indeed we can counter march/protest/distribute leaflets) But this is one area that I would agree with the ACLU...once we start down that slippery slope...especially in the context this ruling seems to portend.... Well, what excuse is going to be given (with all the best of intentions) to *kill* the first amendment off altogether? And which is next? (or perhaps we are going to exorcise them in numeric order).

As an aside I am also not very fond of the Patriot Act. Tho in that case it has (for the moment) a definite end date. And to the best of my knowledge has not come before SCOTUS. There continues to be active debate on it and or any future amendments (Patriot Act II). As much as it is a very big concern to any number of articles of the constitution....there has been precedent both in the civil war and at other times. This does not make it any less of a concern. Just the CFR has already passed both houses and been signed into law and now has been before the judaical branch. And to the best of my knowledge there is no *time constraint* on it.

I shall post more as I read and digest same. But G-d help us all if it is as bad a precedent as I fear.
